Early Literacy

Early literacy begins to develop the moment children are born. Parents and caregivers lay the foundation for children’s language development and reading success in infancy, as babies learn to recognize the sounds in their language and identify words. Practices such as reading books with babies, singing songs, drawing, and pointing out letters are important beginning steps in literacy development.
